Get Your First Van Ready for the Road

Your first obstacle in Nomad Drive is the vehicle sitting outside your starting house. Get its essential parts installed, add fuel and radiator fluid, and pack food and drinking water before leaving. A running van gives you somewhere to carry supplies, but it does not remove the need to maintain the vehicle or yourself.

In the older demo, player demonstrations assemble the starting van from parts scattered around the house and property. Look through rooms, cupboards, the garage area, and the ground outside rather than expecting every part beside the vehicle. The opening checklist identifies components such as wheels, an engine, a battery, a radiator, a handbrake, and a steering wheel.

Carry each part to the vehicle and use the contextual attachment prompt at its matching position. A loose item placed inside the van is different from a component attached to its working mount. Check the displayed condition of mechanical parts as you install them; a spare is more useful when you know which installed component it could replace.

Fill Up and Make the First Start

The demonstrated older demo accepts water in the radiator. A player fills it from a water container using the transfer prompt, then adds petrol from a jerrycan to the fuel tank. Check the contents of your own containers and the vehicle's gauges instead of assuming the opening objective means your tank is full.

Once the essentials are attached:

  1. Put fuel into the fuel tank and fluid into the radiator.
  2. Take the driver's seat and use the ignition control.
  3. Check the driving HUD if the engine does not start.
  4. Release the handbrake before attempting to move.

The developer's official Nomad Drive update notes describe ignition messages for a missing or broken engine, a dead battery, and an empty fuel supply. They also describe a handbrake warning. Use that information to separate an engine that cannot start from a running vehicle that is still held in place.

Pack Supplies Before You Decorate

Community demo playthroughs show food, water containers, first aid kits, spare parts, and maintenance tools in the opening property and subsequent stops. Search for what your trip needs before spending your supplies and daylight restoring every surface of the van.

A useful departure check is:

  • Food and drinking water: keep some available for your character instead of using every container for the vehicle.
  • Repair items: identify engine and tire repair kits separately.
  • Spare components: carry a useful battery or tire when you find one and have room.
  • Storage: in older demo footage, crates help carry several small items together.
  • Light: a flashlight helps you inspect dark rooms, although holding it can limit what you carry in that demo.

Decorating can wait. A tidy van with no drinking water is less prepared than an unfinished one carrying the essentials. This is a practical priority based on the demonstrated survival loop, not a rule that you must collect every item before departure.

Use Roadside Stops to Keep Moving

Follow the road and investigate the buildings and other stops you encounter. In community demo footage, shipping containers, a tower, and smaller roadside locations provide different mixes of supplies and vehicle parts. Procedural generation means the exact sequence and contents can differ from another player's trip.

Stop somewhere you can inspect the site, secure the vehicle, and check both your needs and its condition. Pick up food and fluids you need, compare replacement parts, and carry useful repairs forward. Turn off lights you no longer need: the demonstrated demo warns that leaving lights on drains the battery.

There is also a version boundary to keep in mind. Indie Devil replaced the old demo with a reduced-content version of a newer build before Early Access. Separate playtest footage contains different equipment and systems, including a distinct coolant item. Follow your installed build's item descriptions and prompts rather than treating an older video as an exact current route.

FAQ

Do I need to finish painting before driving?

No. The demonstrated opening gets the van running before completing its cosmetic restoration. Prioritize its operating components, fluids, and your survival supplies.

Why does my engine start but the van will not move?

Check the handbrake and the displayed driving controls. If the engine itself fails to start, read the ignition warning instead of treating both symptoms as the same problem.

Does this route work with an old demo save?

The developer confirmed that saves from the previous demo are incompatible with the replacement demo announced before Early Access. The opening described here comes from older demo demonstrations, not a tested conversion of an old save.
