Select Your Devices in Audio Settings

A connected lobby is not much use if your friends cannot hear you. Nomad Drive voice chat lets you choose microphone and speaker devices in Audio settings, according to the developer's June 29 overhaul. Start there when your voice is missing or reaching the wrong output device.

Older demo players also report using G to switch their own microphone on or off. That control should not be described as a universal mute switch for everybody in the session, particularly because separate demo reports describe unexpected unmuting.

Check the Microphone and Speaker Separately

Use the game's Audio settings to select the microphone you intend to speak through and the speaker or headset you intend to hear through. Ask another player in the same session whether they can hear you, then check whether you can hear them in return.

This separates two different problems: your outgoing microphone and your incoming voice audio. Hearing another player does not prove that your own microphone is transmitting, and turning your microphone off does not establish that incoming voice has been muted.

The official Nomad Drive announcements are the authoritative source for the device-selection feature. They describe rebuilt in-game voice chat, not a requirement to install a separate voice application.

Understand What the G Toggle Is Reported to Do

In a July Steam discussion, a demo player explains that G toggles their microphone. Another discussion specifically distinguishes turning your own mic off from disabling incoming voice chat.

Treat that as the older demo control report. If your build or keybindings differ, follow the displayed control rather than repeatedly pressing an assumed default. The developer also added rebindable controls in the demo updates, although community reports show that not every older binding behaved as people expected.

If your intention is to stop transmitting while you talk elsewhere, verify that the microphone actually remains muted. A button press by itself does not prove the resulting state.

Recognize the Reported Auto-Unmute Problem

A July 29 demo thread reports the microphone turning itself back on without the player pressing G. The same player later clarifies that both participants' microphones were unexpectedly unmuting. That is a reported bug, not merely confusion about which person controls which microphone.

The thread does not establish a confirmed in-game repair. It would be misleading to promise that changing one undocumented setting permanently fixes it. You can keep that distinction when reporting the problem: note the build, which device was selected, what mute action you took, and whether transmission resumed without another keypress.

The developer replaced the earlier demo before Early Access with a reduced-content version of the newer build. That means the July report should remain labeled as an older demo experience; it does not prove the same bug occurs in every replacement-demo or Early Access session.

FAQ

Where do I select my microphone?

The official update notes place microphone and speaker selection in Audio settings.

What does G do in the demo?

Community reports identify it as a toggle for your own microphone. They do not establish it as a switch that mutes every incoming voice.

Can I hear people while my microphone is off?

A demo player reports being able to hear others without speaking. Outgoing microphone state and incoming audio are separate checks.

Is there a proven fix for microphones unmuting themselves?

The collected thread documents the complaint but not a confirmed universal fix. Preserve the actual symptom and version when reporting it.
